SB2H, when released, received mixed and negative reviews. And that is fully understandable. This work of art was significantly different from Kid Cudi’s previous albums, although maybe not WZRD. Furthermore, this album is filled with passion, pain, (but no demon slayin’) and is 100% pure Kid Cudi. An insight and glimpse into his wild and twisted life. A rock adventure into a pit of anger, despair, and confusion. Many would call it unorganized, messy, and a forceful attempt at alternative rock. An album Disliked by many, but appreciated by a few.
To me, personally, I find this album to be perfectly flawed. It’s different, ambitious, and depressingly dark. Somehow it’s loud, but soft at the same time. The calming bass contrasts with the crazy drumming. The smooth humming exceptionally intertwining with the saddening, self-reflecting, and dark topics along with some rowdy screaming. It’s an honest and bold release by the unique Kid Cudi. Yes, it can be a bit repetitive and the Beavis and Butthead “skits”, or whatever they are, can get very annoying.
But it’s his blunt words and unfiltered thoughts that make this album what it is; a pleasantly uncomfortable, chaotic, unpredictable, and thrilling ride of the very real and genuine feelings and emotions that Kid Cudi goes through and experiences. This is an authentic album and that is why I admire him even more. To expose yourself and show your vulnerability through music to the world.
This unexpected “alternative rock” release shocked many. The first time I heard a track on the album was on Spotify, it was a suggested track. So one of the songs came on and I thought to myself, “What is this?”. Less than 30 seconds into the song and I skipped it. It was just different. And this was barely this year. A few weeks later I decided to look more into the album just out of curiosity and now I regret not listening to it earlier. I didn’t even know about Kid Cudi in 2015. And that sucks because like I said, this is a great album. Just give it a try. It might be a bit too extreme for you, very unusual and ill-sounding at first, but after the initial hearing, I’m sure you will appreciate this work of art. It’s not a guarantee you’ll enjoy it, but I’m sure you’ll admire the time and effort that was put in to produce this original and authentic album.
