As initial impressions go, if you had never head Daniel Amos in 1977 and imagined you were purchasing a country rock record, you would not have been completely wrong. There are indeed riffs you might associate with bands such Poco and the Eagles. But there’s far more than Strum und Twang in the grooves of Shotgun Angel. Daniel Amos continued down the country rock path with its sophomore release Shotgun Angel, a record that shows a marked improvement from the band’s self-titled debut a year earlier. And while Daniel Amos’s country roots still show, it’s clear the band is moving toward a more rock-orientated sound. The b-side of the record plays out as a rock opera, awash in lush orchestral arrangements and with obvious influences owed to the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and harmonies reminiscent of the Beach Boys. Daniel Amos has carved its own identity on Shotgun Angel, with the title track, “He’s Gonna Do A Number On You” and “Posse In the Sky” among the record’s highlights that showcase Terry Scott Taylor’s stunning lyricism. Shotgun Angel is a fine record in the DA cannon, and one of those albums that only gets better with repeated listens.
