I connected the 20D to my PC via USB and started EOS utility to change the owner's name, but the program would not recognize the 20D. I tried Normal and PTP communications modes, but in both modes the 'Camera settings/Remote shooting' option was greyed out. Does anyone know what I can do to make the camera detectable? Officially I'm pretty sure win 7 64 doesn't support the 20D, nor the 5D but when I changed that setting on my 5D I was able to use the EOS utility. a camera LOG IN TO REPLY |

I changed it to PTP, and while Windows 7 recognizes the camera, EOS Utility's 'Camera settings' option is still grayed out...the only option I can access in EOS utility is 'monitor folder', which isn't useful for changing the owner name. It's possible the lack of win 7 support prevents that option from being changed. Do you have access to any other computers? a camera LOG IN TO REPLY |

vilamorvilamor 1 post Joined Aug 2010 Location: Sweden | I have the same problem with my 20D. I thought it was something with win7 x64, but today I installed XP SP3 on a virtual machine and I still have the same problem. I use PTP mode which works ok with transfering pics... . In normal mode, windows doesn't detect camera at all. LOG IN TO REPLY |

It's a common communication protocol used by agreement by many camera manufacturers. Using this protocol allows operating systems like Windows to communicate with a variety of camera makes without the need for installing any special camera specific drivers. LOG IN TO REPLY |

The only thing changing the PTP setting will do is allow you to get images of the card while still in camera, and you're much better suited using a card reader for that purpose. In PTP mode, I can use EOS Utility, but it won't allow me to change camera settings. It says to switch to PC Connect. Am I missing something? LOG IN TO REPLY |
BluewookieJimBluewookieJim 1,095 posts Joined Mar 2008 Location: Southern CT | The only thing the PTP mode setting will do for a 20D/5D under windows 7 64 is allow you to use it as a glorified card reader. If you need to use EOS utility for tethering, updating owner data, etc, you will need to run some sort of virtual machine, whether it be XP mode in Win 7 64 Pro, or VMware or similar. About Digital Camera Firmware:
Updating to a newer firmware version than the one already installed on your camera can improve the device’s overall performance and stability, resolve various issues, and add support for newly developed features or enhance existing ones.
On the other hand, downgrading the camera’s firmware can recover its functionality in the unlikely event the currently installed version is faulty or the device’s performance dropped after an upgrade. However, bear in mind that applying an earlier build might not always be possible.
It is recommended that changing the camera’s firmware be performed when the new release resolves an issue that your device has been encountering, or adds a new feature (or enhances an existing one) that could prove useful for you.
This process isn’t intended to be destructive, but still, it’s best to save all your personal data and configurations before applying a different firmware. Moreover, make sure that the battery is fully charged and don’t use the camera’s buttons while the installation is in progress.
When it comes to the update method, usually, you must copy the firmware file onto a compatible memory card, insert it into the camera, and browse from the menu to the device’s update section.
However, each device has various ways to enter the update mode and particular steps that should be taken for a successful upgrade, therefore make sure you read the product’s installation guide.
That being said, if you consider that this firmware improves your device in any way, then hit the download button and get the desired version; if not, check with our website as often as possible so that you don’t miss the update that will boost your camera’s performance.
It is highly recommended to always use the most recent driver version available.
Try to set a system restore point before installing a device driver. This will help if you installed an incorrect or mismatched driver. Problems can arise when your hardware device is too old or not supported any longer.
